God’s Commands and Our Hearts: Lessons from Mount Sinai

The story of God giving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai is one of the most powerful moments in the Bible. After rescuing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, God led them through the desert to Mount Sinai, where He gave them His law. This wasn’t just a list of rules—it was a covenant, a promise between God and His people. God showed that He is holy, powerful, and loving. He came down in fire and smoke, with the sound of a trumpet, to show how serious and sacred His words were (Exodus 19:16–19).

The Ten Commandments teach us how to love God and how to treat others. The first four commandments focus on our relationship with God—putting Him first, worshipping only Him, honouring His name, and keeping the Sabbath day holy. The other six guide how we live with others—honouring parents, not murdering, being faithful in marriage, not stealing, lying, or coveting. These are not just rules to follow but a reflection of God’s own character.

For young Christians today, these commandments are still important. Jesus didn’t come to remove the law but to fulfil it (Matthew 5:17). He summed up the law in two commands: Love God with all your heart and love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:37–39). Obeying God’s commands should come from a heart that loves Him, not just a desire to follow rules.

We also learn from the Israelites’ mistakes. When they grew impatient, they made an idol—the golden calf—breaking the very commands God had given. This reminds us to stay faithful and trust God’s timing, even when we don’t understand.

Ultimately, the commandments point us to Jesus, the only one who kept God’s law perfectly, and through whom we receive grace, forgiveness, and new life.
